Overview of the activities carried out by the Research Group and the research topics covered

  1. Research on photoinitiating systems for photopolymerization processes

Ongoing work is related to the development of new high-performance photoinitiators and initiator systems for photopolymerization processes induced by visible light. One-component photoinitiators dedicated to initiation of cationic polymerization or radical polymerization are synthesized. Moreover, the challenge to obtain water-soluble radical photoinitiators has been faced. Another direction of research is the synthesis of photosensitizers for two-component photoinitiating systems showing versatility due to their ability to initiate all standard photopolymerization processes such as cationic photopolymerization, free radical polymerization, thiol-ene photopolymerization and hybrid photopolymerization.

  1. Research on fluorescent sensors for monitoring photopolymerization processes

The research is also focused on the synthesis and application of new chemical compounds as molecular probes for monitoring photopolymerization processes using FPT (Fluorescence Probe Technology). We are looking for fluorescent markers dedicated to a particular type of polymerization as well as universal sensors – for all types of polymerization. Experimental work is also conducted on sensors for visual detection of the crosslinking degree of polymeric materials.

  1. Research on fluorescent sensors for biological applications

In the Research Group, research is also carried out on new fluorescent sensors dedicated to the detection of metal ions, biomolecules and cell visualization. The work includes the stage of design and synthesis of the sensors and their spectroscopic characterization. Following this, studies are conducted to determine the potential of the obtained compounds for the detection of bio-molecules, ions and pH taking into account potential natural interferents. The area of activity also includes the investigation of the potential application of the developed luminescent sensors for visualizing cellular structures by fluorescence microscopy.

  1. Research on 3D printing processes

Technologies related to VAT polymerization that is 3D printing processes are also developed, including SLA (stereolithography) and DLP (digital light processing). Work is conducted on the development of new types of 3D printers, e.g. construction and expansion/upgrading of commercially available 3D printers with innovative construction solutions consisting in the design and successive incorporation of planned improvements. Research is also conducted on new photo-curable formulations (with various additives) dedicated for 3D printing using photopolymerization processes.

  1. Research on catalytic systems applied in controlled polymerization processes

Ongoing research is related to the development of new photocatalytic systems for controlled radical photopolymerization (photo CRP) such as photo ATRP (Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization) and PET RAFT (photoinduced electron transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization). It is extremely important that photocatalytic systems based on organic chemical compounds with appropriate properties are an excellent alternative to systems based on complexes (e.g.: Cu, Fe, Zn).

  1. Studies on new compounds (of natural origin) exhibiting fluorescent properties for biomedical applications

The research focuses on the synthesis of new fluorescent compounds using citric acid as the main substrate and the addition of various types of amines. The obtained products are analyzed for the presence of compounds with proper absorption characteristics and then the products are separated by various methods to obtain pure fluorescent compounds for possible application in photopolymerization processes or bioimaging. Research is also conducted to optimize the process of obtaining the target products to maximize reaction efficiency.
